End of Us - One Liner
In 2088, a girl (19), crippled with despair, and her father think they are the last people on an Earth infested with Monsters until one day she is visited by her Mother in circumstances that cannot be real.
End of Us - Two Pager
Delta (19) and her father Alex Ferryman (43) are the only people to have survived the apocalypse and live on a harbor island in the middle of the large city of Sydney. They have not seen anyone else in 15 years.
Delta is chronically withdrawn and angry due to her loneliness and despair. She escapes with self-harm, drugs and an imaginary world of angels finding love. But someone mysterious haunts those dreams. Her despair contrasts with Alex’s fulfilment with his self-appointed role in the world: to destroy the now major inhabitant - Sesarma’s - tank sized crab-like creatures that live in hives within the cities of the world.
Without any obvious reason, the Sesarma hives, that scar the entire city, start to emit a loud hum. Alex catches a huge pregnant female where he discovers a new foetus with unexplained electrical properties. Then Delta sees a man, Davos (38) but he is the Angel she sees in her dreams so she doubts her sanity and keeps him a secret from her Father. That night Delta and Alex are awoken by apparitions and strange dreams.
The following day, having already scoured the globe for years using future technology looking for traces of human life, they both see another person walking close to their home within the dangerous hive district. Alex is suspicious and then incredulous when they discover this person is Maria (43), Delta’s mother and Alex’s wife who went missing at the time of the apocalypse 15 years ago. When they see her, their guns and suites shut down without explanation. Delta is overwhelmed by the sight of her Mother but Alex stops her.
Delta, angered by her Father's cautiousness, ignores his fears and leaves the safety of the island to find her Mother in the hive district. Delta and her Mother reunite after 15 years apart. Maria tells her of the community she lives in and tells of her Father's deception and secrets; she tells Delta that her Father has known she was alive and that he cannot face the guilt of knowing he deserted her all those years ago. Together they search for Alex to reunite the family. They find Davos and together they search for Alex.
Meanwhile, Alex learns that the Sesarma egg is a new caste of the species and his lab test shows the creature is much smaller than the normal creatures and the foetus is capable of changing the electrical qualities of things near it - just like those they witnessed when they first saw Maria. His final test shows that the foetus is even capable of changing the perception of the viewer if the viewer is close enough. Alex cannot explain this phenomena but it deepens his suspicions of Maria. He tries to warn Delta of his findings. The hive and the Sesarmas continue to behave in new and unexplained ways.
Alex slowly finds out the terrifying truth behind the hive and Maria. He flies his plane over Maria and Delta and lands a distance away from them. He then views Delta and Maria through binoculars, a good distance from Maria, and because he is outside the radius of effect, he sees Maria for who she really is - a Sesarma. Alex kills Davos and Delta is devastated.
This Sesarma is revealed as having unique abilities to change the perception of its prey by affecting a deep part of the victim’s subconscious by allowing them to think they are seeing someone who they have lost, someone who they would be compelled to go to, a lure to bring the victim to the Sesarma. The perception is so real the victim creates a complete reality of being with the other person. The Sesarma does not kill Delta as it is sufficiently aware to know that it is Alex who is destroying the hive.
Alex tells Delta of his findings. At first Delta believes her father is in denial and screwed up over the grief and guilt of losing Maria all those years ago, but she knows something is not right with Maria. Soon after she tests her Father theory and she too sees that it is not her Mother. All is lost.
Delta, having thought she had found hope, faces her grief and the reality of her world and plunges deeper into despair and then, from out of the chaos she finds a desire to stay alive.
Alex and Maria prepare an escape. Alex lays a trap for the monster and tells Delta to bring Maria. Alex thinks he rescues Delta and traps the monster. But things are not as they seem.
They arrive back to the island by boat safe and sound. Alex looks up. From the boat and there standing on the balcony is Delta!. From within the boat, behind Alex, rises a figure where "Delta" was laying - a Sesarama. Alex leaps into the water and the Sesarma attacks Delta.
Delta hides in the steel room. Via the surveillance system Delta sees a figure lying on the grass. She opens the door to see her Mother lying down motionless. Delta moves towards the weapons as her Mother leaps into the air and morphs into the creature just as Delta traps the creature in the cage next to the guns. The Mother returns and pleads with Delta but Delta, facing the reality of her world for the first time in a long time, spears the creature through the chest killing it.
Alex and Delta are safe and back on the island.
In the aftermath, the computer system alerts them to a satellite finding in Nova Scotia. A satellite image appears of snow covered fields with the words "Alive" marked in the snow.
The End.
